Monarch Feature Story: A Journey Into Lala LandPlay Monarch Feature Story: A Journey Into Lala Land

NORFOLK, Va. -- Monarch fans received their first look into Lala Land last Thursday. Elijah Davis, or more commonly known by his childhood nickname Lala, exploded for 63 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries against Charlotte in his ODU debut. With ODU's deep stable of running backs, the early of emergence of Davis may have come as a surpise. Even for Lala, himself. Davis was expecting to play just one play last Thursday. "My play was the third play of the game and that was the only play I was expecting," said Davis. That play was a 5-yard run on a 3rd-and-9 on the Monarchs' opening drive. "After that play, when they called my name, I just went out and did my job." The next time he touched the ball was in the second quarter, when he bursted for a 15-yard run up the middle. Jolting life into the ODU ground game, the coaching staff stuck with him and, on the next drive, he broke a 20-yarder, bouncing off of would-be tacklers, for his first career touchdown. "I was excited, but I was humbled," said Davis about his breakout performance. "I know there's plenty more times ahead and that I need to keep getting better." Despite running for a Virginia state-record 6,690 yards in his high school career at Heritage High School in Lynchburg, including a nation-high 3,670 yards as a senior, Davis was rated as a three-star recruit and the 97th-best running back in the country, according to 247 Sports. Old Dominion recruited him from the get-go and a strong connection was established. "It just felt like home. They treated me right," said Davis. "And when I got here, I got the same effect. Everything was just real. They were upfront with it." Virginia Tech, who the Monarchs host on Saturday, and West Virginia entered the process late, but Davis' decision was set in stone. "I was Old Dominion all the way," said Davis. Even with his gaudy high school statistics, D

NORFOLK, Va. In his senior year of high school, linebacker Lawrence Garner suffered an ankle injury that led the New Jersey native to rethink his college options. Other schools were set aside and Garner chose Bobby Wilder and Old Dominion University, who stuck to their word to give him a scholarship to play football for the Monarchs, regardless of his physical condition. Three years later, Garner is now three starts into the 2018 football season leading the FBS with 14 tackles per game. Garner's road to this national success did not come easy. "I didn't know when I was going to be able to run, jog or get into pads, but I just put my head down and worked," said Garner. "Even though I might've not played again, I still had to come here and work hard and try to get back to normal." Garner watched from the sidelines as his teammates worked to get better on the field, while he worked on getting healthy again. The sophomore credits his supportive family and the ODU coaching staff for his success through the winding ride of his young college football career. "The coaching staff has been with me all the way through my ups and downs. Coach Wilder has done a great job reminding me that there's more to life than football, this is just setting you up for the real world. My parents telling me to fight through it and that I'm not a quitter, that keeps me going and it makes me want to work even harder knowing I have their support and knowing that if I was to quit, who it would impact." Despite offers from other FBS programs, including some Power Five schools, Garner stuck with a close-knit ODU team, where he now is going to play the biggest game in program history on Saturday afternoon against No. 10 Virginia Tech. Coming into the game, Garner has 42 total tackles, inking a season-high 16 against FIU. "I'm trying to work even harder, because I've had great success early
