NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion freshman quarterback Taylor Heinicke (Atlanta, Ga.) was named the The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS National Freshman of the Week after helping to lead the Monarchs to the second round of the FCS playoffs with a 35-18 win over Norfolk State on Saturday.
Heinicke, a true freshman, completed 21-of-30 pass attempts for 269 yards and a school-record five touchdowns, connecting on touchdown throws of 3, 4, 24, 2 and 18 yards.
This is the true freshman signal caller's second national Freshman of the Week honor from The Sports Network having earned the first accolade after throwing for a season-high 373 yards and three touchdowns in the Monarchs' 42-28 victory over Richmond in week 10.
To date, Henicke has connected on 70 percent of his passes having completed 186 of his 263 attempts with just one interception. The Georgia native, who will be returning to his home state for a second round playoff match-up with Georgia Southern, is averaging 254.9 passing yards per game and has collected 20 touchdown passes.
A Third Team All-CAA selection, Heinicke's name does not appear in the conference or national stats due to the fact he has not played in the minimum 75% of games played to qualify. Appearing following the half of the week five game with UMass, Heinicke has appeared in eight of ODU's 12 games, resulting in him appearing in only 67% of the Monarch contests played.
However, if his name did appear among the national rankings his 254.9 passing yards per game would have ranked 19th nationally, his 160.2 pass efficiency rating would place him fifth nationally, and his 291.1 yards of total offense per contest would put his name 10th nationally.
The Old Dominion Football Monarchs' season continues in the Second Round of the NCAA Division I Football Championships when they take on Georgia Southern on Saturday, December 3rd at 1:00 p.m. on ESPN3.
