A weekly Q&A with an Old Dominion University football player

Charles Walls

Offensive Line

Virginia Beach, Va.

When did you begin playing football?

When I was in 5th grade, I played for the Plaza Browns. We won the 2000 City Championship in Flag.

Who has had the greatest impact on your career?

My high school coaching staff and parents, without those two elements I don't know what I'd be doing.

Why did you choose to attend ODU?

I wanted to go somewhere on the rise. ODU is on its way to the top and I want to be a part of it. Plus it's close to home.

What has been the biggest difference between high school football and college football?

The high intensity of practice. In high school we practiced hard, but nothing compared to college.

What has it been the best part about being a member of ODU's first football team in over 60 years?

The chance to create something new, the media attention, and the beautiful stadium being renovated for us.

If you could play another position what would it be and why?

I'd be a nose tackle. I like it because you're basically taking up space and pushing the line of scrimmage back.

Favorite sports other than your own?

Basketball, Basketball, Basketball

After meeting Coach Wilder for the first time, what were your thoughts?

I'll be aiming high for the next 5 years!!!

After meeting Coach Scott for the first time, what were your thoughts?

I'm going to be "punching people in the mouth" for the next five years!!!

Do you have a pre-game ritual, if so what is it?

Yes, I just look at myself in the mirror and think about my family. I think about what I could do in the game to make our life better.

What is your funniest memory from an ODU practice this far?

The first day we did bag drills, one of my teammates fell hard. It was pretty funny, but other than that practice is generally serious.

If you could line up opposite any player in the NFL and go 1-on-1, who would it be and why?

It would be Casey Hampton, he's a premier nose tackle in the NFL.

What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

I write poetry, I'm actually good at it.

What is your dream job?

To own a sports franchise.

What is your most valued possession?

My grandfather's wallet and gloves.

What is your favorite place to eat on campus?

The Webb Center!!!
