PRESEASON CAMP UPDATE: Day Twelve - Four-Minute Drill
By ODU Athletics
Aug. 20, 2009
NORFOLK, Va. -- The Monarchs were back at it again today with a pair of practices at the Powhatan Sports Complex. On the slate today, the squad worked on the four-minute drill, goal line drill, and more red zone action.
During the goal line drill, the ball was inside the 10 at either third or fourth down. Offensively, the squad's goal was to punch the ball into the end zone, while the defense was looking to get the big stop or force the field goal attempt. Although ultimately the defense wants to stop the score, with a field goal attempt there is still the hopes of either blocking it or the kicker missing the uprights.
"I keep giving these guys different scenarios," said head coach Bobby Wilder, "because I want to have to focus and think during the situations which will arise."
The Monarchs had 12 snaps at the drill with the offense winning eight times by reaching the end zone.
"Defensively, we weren't happy with eight touchdowns out of 12 plays," mentioned Wilder. "We've got to do a better job in that situation. However, when we went to the four-minute drill, the defense bounced back."
While the Monarchs worked on the two-minute drill just the other day, it was the four-minute drill today. In four-minute drill, it was the offense that was ahead in the game with no timeouts. The goal was to protect the lead and run down the clock. The defense's goal meanwhile was get the ball back or force a turnover. In all three segments, the defense ended up forcing a punt and the clock was never run down to zero.
"It's like a chess match," noted head coach Bobby Wilder. "You have to plan your move and your counter move."
