Norfolk, Va. – The Old Dominion University football team took to the field this afternoon for a 3 p.m. practice, the first of 13 preseason sessions the Monarchs will have before the start of classes on Aug. 25. No one was looking forward to this first practice more than head coach Bobby Wilder who coached his last game nearly two years ago.
“Today’s practice was everything I hoped it would be since I got offered the job back on Feb. 9 of last year,” said Wilder. “As a staff we knew it would be a long time before we got a chance to coach, but today was the reward of our progress. We finally got a chance to put a whistle around our necks and be a ball coach again.”
With offensive players sporting blue jerseys with white numbers and helmets and defensive players the opposite, coaches took the 80-man roster through more than 20 sessions. With all 80 players being new to the program, the main focus of the day was learning technique. The Monarchs spent the beginning of practice on special teams before separating into individual position drills.
The first 1-on-1 session of the year gave the players their first opportunity to go head-to-head against their teammates as receivers lined up against defensive backs, running backs against linebackers and the offensive line against the defensive line. It was evident early on that ODU has plenty of talent at the skill positions, particularly at wide receiver and defensive back.
Another special teams segment and an 11-on-11 walkthrough closed out practice for the day.
Practice resumes tomorrow at 9:05 a.m. with players again in helmet and shorts.
