Lauren Timby is in her first year as an ODU swimmer. Coming from Irondequoit High School in Rochester, NY, she set the school record in the 500 freestyle, was named the MVP of the swim team, was named sectional swimmer of the meet and division swimmer of the year. Swimming in the distance freestyle events this year (500, 1,000 and 1,650 yards), Timby has consistently won by considerable margins (including taking the 1,650 yard freestyle in a meet against George Mason by more than a minute over teammate Leslie Blaine to start off the year).

The Monarchs are travelling to George Washington University this Saturday for their final swim meet of the calendar year before returning home Friday, January 16, to face the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.

Being a freshman, coming into this season, what performance expectations did you have?

I didn't really know what to expect. I just wanted to have a good season. College has a different kind of competition, the focus is different.

How do you account for your solid performances in the freestyle events this season (many times winning the distance events by nearly a minute)?

I don't really know. Freestyle is my best event, it just depends on the other team and what their best events are. I'm surprised at how well I'm doing, but I don't concentrate on how much I beat them by. I just focus on my times.

What are some of the differences between swimming on the high school level and swimming at the college level?

The whole training is different. We're focusing on doing well as a team, and not just how well you're doing. There's a whole lot more competition at the college level-for me, anyway.

Do you have any superstitions or particular things that you do going into a swim meet?

Not really, I just go for it. I get focused and get ready for my races, but that's about it.

What is your typical day like?

We have morning practice three times a week, afternoon practice Monday through Saturday unless we have a weekend meet, we have weightlifting three times a week. It gets really busy with school.

How did you get interested in swimming?

I guess I started at a young age. I enjoyed watching it, participating in it. My parents are the ones who really got me started in it.

Why did you choose to come to ODU?

I enjoyed the team and I enjoyed the coaches during the recruiting trip. I really enjoy the school.

So far this season, what has been your most memorable moment as an ODU swimmer?

There's not any one particular moment. I'd say just being part of the team, going to the swim meets, being friends with the people on the team and hanging out with them.

Who inspires/motivates you?

All the people around me: the coaches, the team, myself, past coaches.

Why do you swim the freestyle events as opposed to some of the other strokes like breaststroke or butterfly? Why do you swim the distance freestyle events and not the faster races such as the 50 or the 100 yard?

It's all about the technique. My best stroke is freestyle, I wouldn't do nearly as well doing another stroke. I swim distance because I'm better at pacing myself, I have more time to think about what I'm doing and where I'm at.

How do you spend your free time?

If we don't have a swim meet, we usually have weekends free. The whole team is really close, so we all hang out a lot. The freshman girls hang out a lot. We just relax, have a break from swimming.

What are your swimming goals for this year?

I'm always looking for new best times. I enjoy going to the bigger meets and the conferences to see where I'm at. We've just had a bunch of duals and the Maryland invitational so far. I'm looking forward to going to the bigger meets, just to see where I'm at.
