Baseball Monarchs Lose to UNCW in CAA Tournament

, MANTEO, NC.-- The Old Dominion University Baseball Monarchs lost the elimination game of the 2001 CAA Tournament to UNC Wilmington, 9-5 Wednesday afternoon ending the season with a 19-37 record. Junior thirdbaseman Jeff Eure (Pillow, PA.) led the Monarchs with two hits and two runs batted in.
Eure put Old Dominion up in the first with a solo homerun. With UNCW leading 5-1, Ross Robertson (Chesapeake, Va.) singled up the middle to score David Vilardi (Fishkill, NY.) to make it 5-2.
Eure then knocked in Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, Md.) in the Monarchs three-run seventh. Matt Moye (Beaver Falls, Pa.) knocked in a run in the seventh and scored on a wild pitch.
UNCW was led by David Ange with three RBI's. Justin Wishon, Magnus Pilegard, Jamie Hemmingway and David McKenna each had two hits on the day for the Seahawks. Starting pitcher Brian Whitaker won his tenth game of the season, scattering ten hits and fanning seven. Reliever Matt McDonnell picked up the save with three scoreless innings and four strikeouts. UNCW will have Thursday off and play on Friday at 7 p.m.
Allen Strick ended up as the Monarchs top hitter with a .296 average, while Matt Moye was second at .289. Jeff Eure led the Monarchs in homers with seven and rbi's with 40.
