WILMINGTON, NC-The Old Dominion men's soccer squad claimed the top spot in next week's CAA soccer championship with a 5-1 drubbing of conference foe UNC-Wilmington this evening. The win also marks the second time in three years that the Monarchs have claimed the top spot, and they have now gone 9-1-3 in CAA competition over the last two seasons.
Four different players scored for the Monarchs this evening, but it was sophomore Chad Denton (Va. Beach, VA) who led the way, putting them on the board first at the 31:58 mark. Old Dominion broke things open after the half, as freshman midfielder Kevon Harris (Kingston, Jamaica) and senior defender Adam Colborne (Greensboro, NC) put in early goals to push the lead to 3-0. Denton scored again just before the 70th minute, and Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) put in his 15th goal of the season with just under five minutes remaining to ice the game.
UNCW's Tommy Miller prevented the home team from being shut-out with a goal at 88:56. Miller was fouled in the ODU box and converted a penalty kick for the Seahawks lone score.
Old Dominion will return to action next week, when they take part in the CAA Tournament, November 15-18 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. As a benefit from receiving the number one seed, the Monarchs will have a first-round bye and play their first game on Friday night.
