FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Monarchs continued their dominance this season with two more dual victories on Sunday, as they never trailed in either match. ODU dropped CAA foe George Mason, 32-12, and then traveled to Washington, D.C. and beat American, 31-12. Kaylen Baxter, the nationwide leader in wins, led the Monarchs with two technical falls and Jesse Strawn added two pins at 184 lbs. ODU improves to 15-3/5-1 this season with the pair of victories.

In the 11:00 am dual against the Patriots, ODU got off to a quick start, winning the first four bouts with three bonus point victories. James Nicholson earned the first of his two victories on the day by technical fall, 20-5, over Brian Wright. Kyle Hutter followed with a 9-3 decision over Joe Coughlin and Ryan Williams earned an 11-2 major over Will Powars.

Baxter would follow with his first technical fall of the day, finishing the Patriot grappler in 6:12 by a final score of 17-2. Frankie McLaughlin would put George Mason on the board with a 7-4 decision over ODU's Dan Rivera, but ODU would win the next three to put the dual out of reach.

No. 18 Chris Brown pinned Mason's Greg Scott in the first period to give ODU a 20-point lead and senior Nick Pullano dropped Randy Oates 8-4 to seal the victory for ODU. Jesse Strawn followed as he pinned Bill Widener in the second period of his match.

At 197 lbs, David Mendoza suffered the first of two heartbreaking losses on the day. He battled with freshman Cayle Byers to a 9-8 loss in the first dual of the day, and later he would face the No. 1 grappler in the nation at his weight and narrowly miss the upset, 4-2.

Andy Totusek was pinned by Harry Zander in the heavyweight bout for the final score of 32-12.

In the 2:00 pm dual, against American, ODU opened much the same, winning three of the first four bouts to go up 14-3. Nicholson won a forfeit, followed by an 8-2 decision by Hutter in the 133-lb bout. Ryan Williams suffered a rare loss at 141-lbs, losing 5-2 before Baxter would notch his second technical fall at 149-lbs. The win was the 70th in the career of the redshirt sophomore as he added to his nationwide lead in wins with 36 on the season.

Rivera suffered another tight loss, losing 6-3 at 157 lbs. Brown had an opportunity to knock off a nationally ranked grappler at 165 lbs, as he faced No. 7 Mike Cannon. The two wrestled to a 5-3 decision in favor of the Eagle grappler, as Brown lost just his tenth on the year.

Pullano and Strawn followed with a technical fall and pin, respectively, before Mendoza faced No. 1 Josh Glenn. After the 4-2 loss, Totusek pinned Brooks Keefer with just eight seconds remaining in the first period for the final tally of 31-12.

The Monarchs improve to 15-3 on the season and 5-1 in the CAA.

ODU returns home next Sunday, February 10 as they host Rider in CAA action at 5:00 pm. The game will immediately follow the women's basketball game against William & Mary.
