NORFOLK, VA -- Both current and future ODU Monarchs are being honored through the national wrestling media, including two Monarchs being named to the National All-Rookie Team by Amateur Wrestling News. Both Chris Brown (Chesapeake, VA) and David Mendoza (Wyomissing, PA) were named to AWN's 2007 All-Rookie Team. Also, three ODU recruits have been named among the nation's best as the high school wrestling season concludes. Local Great Bridge High School wrestler Scott Cust was ranked among the All-Class All-Americans by AWN, InterMat, and W.I.N. Magazine. Also ranked by InterMat was Roy Dragon III (Bridgewater, NJ) and named an All-American by AWN was Derek Peperas (Midwest City, OK).

The current Monarchs, Brown and Mendoza, join freshman James Nicholson in the national spotlight this week. Nicholson is the first Monarch to ever be named as an alternate for the FILA Junior World Team. He earned the honor after competing among the nation's best freestyle wrestlers in Colorado Springs this weekend at the Team Trials.

Mendoza ranked sixth in the 197-lb. weight class on AWN's All-Rookie Team, while Brown was ranked the fourth-best rookie among 157 pounders.

Cust, projected to wrestle at 184 lbs. for the Monarchs, was ranked 8th All-Class for W.I.N. Magazine for the 20th ranked Great Bridge team. Also earning All-American honors from AWN, he was ranked 10th All-Class by InterMat at 189 lbs.

Dragon, one of the Monarchs early signees in the fall of 2006, ranks 18th among InterMat's All-Class Rankings at 215 lbs. The senior tallied a 107-10 career mark in New Jersey with 77 career pins.

Peperas, honored as an Amateur Wrestling News All-American comes to ODU from Oklahoma with a 177-7 record. He is a five-time state finalist, including a fourth place finish as an 8th grader, and twice a state champion of New Mexico.

The Monarchs wrestling community can expect the accolades to keep coming, as several of the national honors have yet to be released for the year.
