NORFOLK, Va. -- Old Dominion head football coach Bobby Wilder has announced the addition of Ryan Martin as the Associate Head Strength and Conditioning Coach with the primary responsibilities for the day-to-day strength and conditioning program for Old Dominion football. Martin joins the Monarch family with more than 10 years of experience as a strength and conditioning coach, including internships with Notre Dame and the Indianapolis Colts.
"Our football coaching staff is very excited with the addition of Ryan," said Wilder. "He understands what exactly we need to do to compete in the best I-AA football conference in the country, the CAA."
Most recently Martin served as the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator for 18 Division I sports at Hofstra University. He directly oversaw all the daily facets of training for football, men's and women's lacrosse, and field hockey. While with Pride, Martin helped develop two NFL draft picks (Willie Colon - Fourth Round; Marques Colston - Seventh Round), along with nine free-agent signings.
From 2001-2004, Martin was the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for 21 sports at the Southern Conference's Davidson College. While working with the Wildcats, he was one of six finalists for the 2004 NSCA College Strength and Conditioning Professional of the Year Award.
Martin spent time with the Indianapolis Colts and the University of Notre Dame as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach in 2001. With the Colts, he helped supervise and implement flexibility, strength, and conditioning programs for the players, as well as assist with data analysis, testing for performance, and evaluating current scientific research as it pertains to performance enhancement. During his time with the Irish, Martin implemented and supervised programs for football, as well as all 26 of Notre Dame's Olympic varsity sports.
While pursuing his master's degree at Indiana State, Martin worked as a Graduate Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach with the Sycamores, working along side baseball, volleyball, and women's basketball and interned at Northwestern University, working specifically with men's soccer, golf, tennis, and wrestling.
Martin has ties to the Hampton Roads area as he was an intern with the football team at the Apprentice School, coaching the tight ends in a West Coast style offense, as well as assisting with special teams.
Prior to coming to the Hampton Roads region, Martin worked at Acceleration, Indiana as a sports specific trainer, while obtaining his undergraduate degree at Anderson University.
Martin received a B.A. in physical education from Anderson University in 1998 and was awarded a M.S. in exercise science/biomechanics from Indiana State in 2000.
