Lady Monarch Tennis Standout Tzipi Obziler Adds To ODU's List Of Olympians

Norfolk, Va. - The list of Old Dominion University alumni competing in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China grew to 11 today when it was learned that former Lady Monarch tennis player Tzipi Obziler has been selected to play doubles alongside Sharar Peer for their native Israel. Obziler joins a list of former Monarchs that includes four sailors, four field hockey players, a women's basketball player and the head coach of the United States women's basketball team.
The 35-year old Obziler is currently the ranked 116th in the world by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), posting a singles mark of 17-18 and a doubles record of 10-8 on the year. Ranked the No. 1 collegiate women's tennis player in the country in the fall of 1995 while at ODU, Obziler has played in all three Grand Slam events this season, most recently at Wimbledon where she fell in the first round. The Olympic Tennis Event will be played from Sunday Aug. 10 through Sunday Aug. 17 at the new Olympic Tennis Center in Beijing, China.
