Wrestling Picks Up First Dual Win Over Howard

NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University wrestling team picked up their first dual meet win of the season with a 24-15 win over Howard this afternoon. With the win, Old Dominion starts the season at 1-0 while the Bison fall to 0-1.

Defending CAA Champion Dennis Whitby (Lanoke Harbor, NJ) got the Monarchs started on the right foot with a 5-0 win over Aron Carter in the first match of the afternoon at 149. After Howard tied the match with an Ephraim Walker victory at 157, Old Dominion reeled off two straight pins for a 15-3 lead. Sophomore Jacob Cairns (Brick, NJ) pinned Brandon Hogan at 165, and junior Jeff Rusak (Reading, PA) pinned Milton Yates in the 184 match. It was the fifth pin of the season for Rusak, who is ranked 14th in the country at 174.

The Monarchs will return to dual meet action on January 28, when they host American University. In the meantime, Old Dominion will be participating in several tournaments over the coming weeks, including the Penn State Open on December 3.
