NORFOLK, VA (Sept. 25) - Senior forward Jimmy Tanner (Syracuse, NY) scored two goals and freshman midfielder Michael Tooley (Richmond, VA) scored the other to lead the Monarchs to a 3-1 win over American in their 1999 CAA opener. Old Dominion improves to 5-2-0, 1-0-0, as American drops to 2-4-0, 0-1-0.

The Monarchs scored all three goals in the first half, with the first strike coming less than a minute into the contest. At the 54 second mark, American committed a handball foul in the box and Tanner blasted his sixth goal of the season on the penalty kick.

Less than ten minutes later, Tanner struck again, this time taking a long pass out of the backfield and advancing it another twenty-five yards before ripping it into the far left corner of the net. Tooley added his fifth goal of the year in the 34th minute with an assist from Tanner, putting the Monarchs up 3-0 at the half.

In the second half, both teams found opportunities to score but were unable to find the back of the net until the 87th minute when Old Dominion committed a handball foul in the box. American's Adam Rosen converted the penalty kick, spoiling the Monarch shutout.

Old Dominion returns to action on Tuesday, September 28, as they travel to Wilmington to take on UNCW at 7:00 pm.
