Joey Caruthers ('77) To Be ODU's Legend At CAA Tournament

NORFOLK, VA-- Joey Caruthers who led ODU in assists as a sophomore, junior, and senior and was a starting guard for the Monarchs' 1975 NCAA Division II National Championship basketball team will be the Monarchs legend at the 2011 CAA Tournament. He will be honored at the CAA Tournament banquet Thursday night and at halftime of ODU's game Saturday.

Caruthers teamed with another ODU Hall of Famer Oliver Purnell, while playing for Monarch Hall of Fame coach Sonny Allen to lead the Monarchs to a 25-6 record en route to the national crown.

In four seasons, Caruthers played 118 games, which at the time of his graduation ranked him fifth on the school's all-time list. He ranks third at Old Dominion with 619 career assists and second in career steals with 188. In 1975, Caruthers earned a spot on the South Atlantic Regional MVP that same year. As a senior, Caruthers helped lead the Monarchs to a 25-4 record in the school's first NCAA Division I season which included the state's longest winning streak of 22 straight games. That year, ODU played Villanova in the NIT.

Caruthers scored a career high 22 points in a game against Washington and Lee as a Junior. He also dished out a career high 11 assists against Baptist College and hauled in nine rebounds in a game against VMI.

Since graduation, the native of Belle, W.Va., currently lives in Virginia Beach where he has taught in the Virginia Beach school system and is a college basketball referee. Joey has two daughters, Jennifer who graduated from ODU last December and Jamie who plans to attend VCU in the fall.

Joey was inducted into the ODU Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. Past ODU Legends at the CAA Tournament have been former head coach Sonny Allen, Jeff Furhmann, Joel Copeland, Cal Bowdler, Dave Twardzik, former coach Paul Webb and Kenny Gattison.
