NORFOLK, VA. -- The number #3 worn by ODU Baseball coaching legend Bud Metheny will be retired Saturday before the Monarchs game with William and Mary, at approximately 4:45 p.m.

Metheny, who spent 32 years at the University from 1948-1980 was 423-363-6, won two NCAA College Division East Regional Championships, and was the 1964 College Division National Coach of the Year died on Jan. 2.

Metheny was the last New York Yankee to wear #3 before it was retired in honor of Babe Ruth in 1947. Metheny played the outfield for the Yankees from 1943 to 1946.

He came to the Norfolk Division (as ODU was known then) in 1948. Metheny not only coached baseball, but was the men's basketball head coach from 1948-1965, compiling a 198-163 with 16 winning seasons. He also served as the University's athletic director from 1963-1970.

Following his retirement it was only fitting to honor Bud with the naming of the new baseball stadium in 1983 and with the adoption of the blue and white pin stripes of the Yankees on uniforms.

Metheny is a member of the College Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, the Old Dominion University Sports Hall of Fame, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, the William and Mary Hall of Fame and the Tidewater Baseball Hall of Fame.
