Maryland Defeats Old Dominion in Wrestling, 28-21
By ODU Athletics
The match began at 174 with Old Dominion's Jeff Rusak (Reading, PA) recording a pin against Maryland's Tony Capone, his 28th victory of the season. Freshman heavyweight Derrell Lorthridge (Wilmington, DE) pinned his opponent to give the Monarchs a 12-9 lead after four matches, but Maryland would come back to record pins at 125 and 133. A Terp decision at 141 pushed the Maryland lead to 24-12, but Old Dominion's Dennis Whitby (Lanoke Harbor, NJ) and Jesse Pearce (Norfolk, VA) claimed victories in the next two bouts to cut the lead to 24-21. Maryland's Josh Weldman snuffed hopes of a comeback victory, however, with a major decision at 165 in the last bout of the evening.
With the loss, Old Dominion falls to 6-6 on the year. The Monarchs will return to action on Sunday, February 18, when they host Delaware State.
