WINSTON-SALEM, NC. - After battling 87-plus minutes to a scoreless dual, Jeremiah White's goal with 2:08 left in the match lifted top ranked and number one seed Wake Forest to a 1-0 victory over the Monarchs in the second round of the NCAA Division I Soccer tournament played at Spry Stadium.
"We knew coming in we were not going to get a lot of chances, so we tried to win the midfield and take advantage when an opportunity arose," said ODU head coach Alan Dawson.
That opportunity came with about 32 minutes left in the match when CAA Player of the Year Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) had a break-a-way, but Wake's Michael Parkhurst came from almost out of nowhere to make the save.
Wake Forest outshot the Monarchs 20-5 as ODU goalkeeper Samuel Cameron (Raleigh, NC.) came up with an ODU season high 14 saves. The Monarchs who lost to Wake Forest back on Sept. 7 in Norfolk, 2-1 finish the season 10-9-1, while the Deamon Deacons are now 15-1-4.
