Monarchs lose final home season match, 21-24, to James Madison

NORFOLK, VA (February 23, 2003) - The Old Dominion wrestling Monarchs closed their home season Sunday afternoon at the ODU Fieldhouse against the James Madison University Dukes in a 21-24 loss. Before the match ODU paused to honor seniors, Charlie Busch (Rochester, MN), Tim Goodale (Riverhead, NY), Dave Kaplan (Woodbridge, VA), Ben Summerlin (Lynchburg, VA) and Joe Wright (Newport News, VA) as well as their Dean's List members.

Redshirt Freshman Chris Buckner (Chesapeake, VA), 133, started out the afternoon for the Monarchs with a 4-0 decision to give the team their only lead of the afternoon. The Dukes posted consecutive pins in the 141 & 149 pound classes to give them a 12-3 advantage. Junior Dennis Whitby (Lanoke Harbor, NJ), and Senior Dave Kaplan added decisions at 157 & 165 to bring the Dukes lead down to 12-9. Wrestling his last bout at the Fieldhouse, Senior Ben Summerlin, 174, and Freshman Adam Wright (Bridgewater, VA), 184, each lost in two point decisions, which combined with a fall over Junior Greg Gill (Chesapeake, VA) dropped ODU to 9-24 overall. Juniors Derrell Lorthridge (Wilmington, DE), 285, and John Starkes (Chesapeake, VA), 125, both pinned their opponents to finish out the match and bring the Monarchs to a 21-24 final score.

The Monarchs close out their regular season at George Mason University on Wednesday, February 26.
