Results From The ITA All-American Pre-Qualifier

CHATTANOOGA, TN -- The Old Dominion men's tennis team was in action this weekend at pre-qualifying rounds of the Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championship at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, TN. The Monarchs were led by doubles team junior Zoltan Csanadi (Timisoara, Romania) and sophomore Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) who reached the Round of 32.
Csanadi and van der Merwe opened play with an 8-3 victory in the Round of 128 against Marquette's duo of Ian Kawas and Elgintas Vedrickas. They followed with an 8-3 win against Trevor McLeod and Joao Menano of Georiga Teach in the Round of 64. The tandem then fell in the Round of 32 with an 8-5 loss to Texas' Ryan Haymond and Alastair Jenkin.
In other doubles competition, senior Patrik Binkowski (Orby, Sweden) and junior Calin Milos (Timisoara, Romania) reached the Round of 64. They opened play with an 8-6 win over Wisconsin's Dave Hippee and Alex Kasarov. Binkowski and Milos then lost a heartbreaker, 9-8 (5), to Wake Forest's Brett Ross and Derrick Spice, the same duo who fell to Csanadi and van der Merwe in the championship game of the Virginia Tournament in mid-September. Freshman Adriano Mello (Londrina, Brazil) and senior Salman Mohammed (Calcutta, India) fell in the opening round, 8-4, to Matt Mayer and Harry Walsh of Louisville.
In singles competition, four Monarchs advanced to the Round of 128. Patrik Binkowski defeated Ben Archer-Clowes of New Mexico State, 6-7 (10), 7-5, 6-0 in the opening round, but dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Tulsa's Steve Timperley. Salman Mohammed used a straight set, 6-2, 6-0, win to advance past Marquette's Ian Kawas, but then dropped a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 match to David Bere of Wake Forest. Calin Milos posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Bulter's Brandon Gill to reach the next round, but lost a 6-3, 6-3 round to San Franciso's Jorgen Arnessen. Junior Niklas Oskarsson (Halmstad, Sweden) used a 6-1, 6-1 match to advance over Tulsa's Tom Murray, but fell 6-2, 6-1 in the following round to Hector Almada of Fresno State.
Zoltan Csanadi dropped a hard fought 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, match to Scott Doerner of Pepperdine in other Monarch singles action.
