NORFOLK, VA -The Old Dominion baseball team swept their double-header against Rutgers Sunday, winning 13-8 and 12-5.  For the series, the Monarchs won two of three.  ODU improves to 11-6 overall, while Rutgers falls to 5-3.

The Monarchs got things started quickly during the first game, scoring five runs in the first inning to take a 5-0 lead.  Keith Hahn (Valley Stream, NY) scored on a passed ball to give ODU a 1-0 lead before a double by Steven Harris (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam) brought in two more runs.  Patrick Nichols (Chesapeake, VA) and Jesse Schoendienst (Belcamp, MD) also had RBIs for ODU.

Patrick Nichols extended ODU's lead in the bottom of the third, hitting a three-run home-run to give the Monarchs the 8-0 lead.  Rutgers clawed back into the game, out-scoring ODU 6-2 over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to cut the lead to 10-6.  In the bottom of the eighth, though, the Monarchs scored three runs to take a 13-6 lead.  Rutgers scored two in the top of the ninth, but the Monarchs held on for the 13-8 victory.

The second game started much the same way for ODU, as the Monarchs scored four runs in the first inning to grab a 4-0 lead.  Rutger's pitcher O.J. DeChristofan hit two of the first three batters he faced and Evan Chipman (Raleigh, NC) got on base by an error, setting up Tyler Belcher's (Bristol, VA) single to right field that brought in two runs.  Justin Gregula (Washington, PA) and Patrick Nichols also had RBIs.

Rutgers scored two in the second inning to make the score 4-2, but ODU scored eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 12-2 lead.  Patrick Nichols doubled late in the inning, bring in another 2 RBIs, to help the Monarchs.  The Scarlet Knights scored two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to bring the score to 12-5, but ODU held on for the victory.
