Monarchs Win Fifth Straight Dual, Defeating George Mason 28-10

NORFOLK, VA -The Old Dominion wrestling team finished off their dual season Sunday evening with their fifth straight win, defeating the George Mason Patriots 28-10 before the largest crowd of the season at the ODU Field House--438. With the win, the Monarchs improve to 12-5 for the season and 7-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The 12 victories are the most since the 1995-96 season, when the Monarchs also went 12-5. The Patriots fall to 8-7 and 4-4 in the CAA.
The Monarchs started off strong, as Robby Gosnell (Warrenton, VA/165) and John Adams (Chesapeake, VA/Deep Creek/174) both won their matches by major decision, giving ODU the 8-0 lead. Adam Wright (Dayton, VA/184) then earned the only tech fall of the evening, defeating Jim Martin 23-7, to extend the ODU lead to 13-0. George Mason answered back with a major decision and a decision to bring the score to 13-7.
Christian Staylor (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge/125) defeated Joe Coughlin by a 9-4 decision to give ODU the 16-7 lead, and B.J. Compton (Christiansburg, VA/133) accepted a George Mason fall to extend the lead to 22-7. Shanon Slack (Richmond, VA/141) and Nick Pullano (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge/157) both earned decision victories, while Hunter Davenport (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge/149) suffered a narrow 8-6 loss to give ODU the 28-10 victory.
The Monarchs will next compete in the CAA Championship, March 3-4 at Boston University.
