SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - Redshirt sophomore Justin LaValle picked up his second win of the 2012 NCAA Wrestling Championships on Friday as the Old Dominion University Wrestling team concluded action at the Scottrade Center in this year's tournament.
In session three on Friday morning in consolation action, Justin LaValle faced Missouri's Nicholas Hucke at 141 pounds. After a scoreless first period, an escape by LaValle in the second followed by a late takedown gave the Monarch a 3-0 lead going to the final period. Hucke would get a takedown to close within one but an escape and a late takedown would seal the win for LaValle, 6-2.
In 157-pound consolations, John Nicholson would be pitted against his second opponent seeded in the top six of the bracket when he faced #6 James Fleming of Clarion. A takedown and a three-point nearfall by Felming late in the first period would power the seeded grappler to the win. Nicholson was able to get a takedown in the second and an escape in the third period but could get no closer as he fell, 9-3.
Facing an opponent he saw at the Virginia Duals back in January, LaValle took an early lead on Edinboro's Mitchell Port in an exciting first period. After an escape by the Scot, LaValle picked up another takedown before Port reversed on him just before the end of the period to make it 4-3 for ODU. Starting down in the second period, LaValle was unable to escape from the bottom and was ridden out for the period. In the third period, Port, who started down, reversed on LaValle to take a 5-4 lead. The Monarch was able to escape but a point was awarded to Port for riding time advantage to give Edinboro the 6-5 narrow win.
ODU finished the regular season ranked in the top-25 nationally and set a school record this season with seven wrestlers qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
