No. 23 Men's Soccer Falls To Defending National Champions, 2-0

NORFOLK, Va. -- The No. 23 Old Dominion men's soccer team fell in its 2006 season opener to defending national champions and preseason No. 1 Maryland, 2-0, Friday night in front of a record 3,331 people at the ODU Soccer Stadium.
Sophomore Graham Zusi struck first for the Terps scoring in the second minute of action. Zusi intercepted a Monarch pass in front of the box for the tally.
Maryland's second goal came later on in the second half as junior Stephen King, the Terps' leading returning scorer, capitalized on a penalty kick in the game's 41st minute.
Old Dominion did manage to outshoot last year's champions 11-10 with junior David Horst (Pine Grove, Pa.) and senior Ross Mackenzie (Richmond, Va.) each recording three shots apiece. King, Zusi, and senior A.J. Godbolt each led the Terps with two shots each.
In goal, freshman Evan Netwon (Virginia Beach, Va.) posted thee saves for Old Dominion in his collegiate debut, while Chris Seitz stopped four Monarch shots on net for the Terps.
The Old Dominion men's soccer team will hit the road for their next three games. Next weekend the Monarchs travel to Rhode Island for tournament play against Harvard on Friday, September 1st, and the host Rams on Sunday, September 3rd. The Monarchs also travel to Elon on Wednesday, September 3rd before hosting the annual Stihl Soccer Classic.
