NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University wrestling team fell to the No. 11 University of Virginia on Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville, Va. Four of the 10 matches on Sunday afternoon were decided by one point; Old Dominion lost all four matches.

Old Dominion head coach, Steve Martin said, “We wrestled hard today, so from an effort prospective we can’t be upset. We knew going in that UVA had nine guys nationally ranked and that we had opportunities to knock off national caliber wrestlers. Mecate and Henderson took advantage of their situations and knocked off top-20 wrestlers. We had several other guys come very close, but unfortunately close does not count in Division I athletics. We will take the positive out of this situation and continue to make strides for the NCAA tournament next month."

Old Dominion now drops to 10-7 overall this season. Virginia advances to 14-3 overall, while remaining a perfect 6-0 at home.

The first two matches of the day were determined by a combined two points. In the 125-pound bout, Old Dominion’s Rob Deutsch grappled with UVA’s No. 9 Matt Snyder. Snyder is a two-time NCAA qualifier. In what turned out to be a very even and competitive match, it was Snyder who pulled out the 1-0 decision over Deutsch.

The 133-pound match featured two nationally ranked wrestlers in No. 29 Scott Festejo and No. 14 George DiCamillo. DiCamillo is a freshman from Ohio, who has compiled an impressive 25-7 record so far this season. Festejo and DiCamillo went down to the wire; however, DiCamillo was able to squeak out a 4-3 victory over Festejo. Virginia now jumped out to an early 6-0 lead over the Monarchs.

The 141-pound match also showcased two nationally ranked wretlers. Old Dominion’s No. 11 Chris Mecate squared-off with Virginia’s No. 15 Joe Spisak. Spisak was a NCAA qualifier at 133 pounds in 2011. However, Spisak proved to be no match for ODU’s redshirt-freshman, as Mecate cruised to a 6-2 victory. Mecate’s win extended his winning streak to seven matches and cut UVA’s lead down to 6-3.

Josh Clark filled-in for the Monarchs at 149-pounds. Clark had a tall-task of facing-off with UVA’s No. 15 Derek Valenti. Valenti is a two-time NCAA qualifier and became an All-American in 2011. Clark proved he belonged, but ended up losing 1-0 to No. 15 Valenti.

Brennan Brumley matched-up with Virginia’s No. 9 Jedd Moore in the 157-pound battle. Moore was a NCAA qualifier in 2009. In yet another match decided by one point, Old Dominion’s Brumley lost (3-2) to No. 9 Moore. The Cavaliers now led the Monarchs 12-3.

In the 165-pound match, Brett Miller wrestled No. 7 Nick Sulzer. Sulzer was a NCAA qualifier for Virginia last year. Sulzer won via major decision (16-7) over Miller.

UVA's No. 15 Jon Fausey won the 174-pound match via tech fall over Marcus Johnson. Fausey was a NCAA qualifier in 2011 (174) and 2012 (184). Virginia now led Old Dominion, 21-3.

Old Dominion’s 184-pounder, Austin Coburn grappled with Virginia’s No. 26 Stephen Doty. In a tight match, Doty got the better of Coburn, 2-0.

Jacob Henderson and No. 20 Michael Salopek would need extra-time to decide their match. Salopek was a NCAA qualifier in 2010 at 184 pounds. But, it was Henderson who would come out on top with a 3-1 sudden-victory. Old Dominion now trailed Virginia 24-6.

In the battle of heavyweights, Old Dominion’s Matt Tourdot went up against Virginia’s Derek Papagianopoulos. Papagianopoulos ended up defeating Tourdot, 5-2. This sealed Virginia’s 27-6 victory over the Monarchs.
