NORFOLK, VA--George Mason's junior righthander Anthony Montefusco tossed a five-hit complete game shutout and knocked in the game's only run as the Patriots defeated Old Dominion, 1-0 Saturday afternoon at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. The game was televised by Cox Communications. The loss ended ODU's four-game winning streak.

The Monarchs are 25-22 overall and 14-12 in the CAA, while Mason improves to 17-32 overall and 7-19 in the CAA.

Montefusco and ODU's senior righthander Mike Ney were locked up in a scoreless pitcher's duel into the seventh inning.

Ney was making only his second start ever at ODU (he started one game in 2012), was working on a no-hitter into the seventh inning when Mason outfielder Blaise Fernandez reached on a two-base Monarch error, then Montefusco helped his own cause with a run scoring single for the game's only run. Ney walked two, and struckout two. Fellow ODU senior Brandon Smith pitched the final three innings of scoreless ball.

The complete game shutout was the first of Montefusco's career as he fanned a season high 10 Monarchs, walked two along with allowing five hits.

ODU threatened in the third inning after senior Shawn Sizemore led off with a single and shortstop Tyler Urps followed with a hit, but the Monarchs could not score. Sizemore led ODU with two hits, while Urps, freshman Connor Myers and catcher Michael Perez each had one hit on the day.

Today's televised contest was also viewed in Northern Virginia and the Roanoke area. ODU's six seniors, Brandon Smith (Chesapeake, VA.), Shawn Sizemore (Newport News, VA.), Austin McGowan (Midlothian, VA., Mike Ney (Vineland, NJ.), Drew Coker (Chester, VA.) and Erick Baker (Marrietta, PA.)were honored in a pre-game ceremony.

The third and final game of the series is Sunday at 1 p.m.
