The Old Dominion wrestling team lost 25-12 to visting N.C. State in non-conference dual action on Saturday. The meet was held in conjunction with the Virginia Middle School Challenge and the standing room only crowd was the largest ever to witness a dual match in the ODU Fieldhouse.

The Wolfpack took a 13-3 lead after four matches, winning three of those four. George Cintron recorded a 12-5 decision over junior John Starkes (Chesapeake, VA) at 125 pounds. At 141 pounds, Ryan McCallum picked up six points for his team with a fall over ODU's Charlie Busch (Rochester, MN) in 3:21. Jake Giamoni took a 17-9 major decision win over Monarch 149-pounder freshman Chad Sichak (Johnstown, PA), giving N.C. State the ten point advantage.

Redshirt freshman Chris Buckner (Chesapeake, VA) was the first Monarch to win on Saturday as he came from behind to defeat Dan Pacitti, 8-7 in the 133-pound match. Pacitti jumped out to a quick lead and had over two minutes of riding time before Buckner was able to fight back. Buckner took a one-point lead of his own and was able to ride his opponent out in the last few seconds to take away Pacitti's advantage time.

At 157, Dennis Whitby (Lanoke Harbor, NJ) brought the Monarchs within seven, 13-6, with a 10-4 decision win over NC State's Bryant Reames. But, Dustin Kawa increased the Wolfpack's lead back to 10, 16-6, after a 10-3 win at 165 over freshman Matt Ulrey (St. Mary's, MI).

Senior 174-pounder Ben Summerlin (Lynchburg, VA) continued his winning ways with a hard-fought 4-3 decision win over Kevin Gabrielson. Summerlin won in the same fashion as Buckner, coming from behind and negating Gabrielson's advantage time. Summerlin brought the score within seven, 16-9, with ODU's second straight win.

Again the visitors would go ahead by 10 when John Godwin defeated ODU freshman Adam Wright (Bridgewater, VA), at 184 pounds, 6-3 to make the score 19-9. N.C. State's Matt Gulliver would officially put ODU out of it when he pinned 197-pounder Greg Gill (Chesapeake, VA) in 2:49 to give his team a 25-9 lead. Junior heavyweight Derrell Lorthridge (Wilmington, DE) earned his team-best 21st win off the year, a 5-1 decision against Leroy Harris. Lorthridge remains perfect in dual competition at 10-0 on the year.

ODU falls to 4-6 with the loss while N.C. State improves to 5-5 with their fifth win in seven matches. The Monarchs have now dropped four of their last five.

Old Dominion will hit the road for two matches this week. On Wednesday they visit Campbell for a match starting at 7:00 p.m. before taking on conference foe Drexel on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. They will home be again next Sunday for their annual Scholarship match against Virginia at 2:00 p.m. in the ODU Fieldhouse.
