NEW YORK, N.Y. - Former Old Dominion University pitching great Justin Verlander ('04) of the Detroit Tigers unanimously won the American League Cy Young Award on Tuesday. Verlander became the ninth unanimous AL Cy Young Award winner and first since Johan Santana in 2006.

Verlander went 24-5 with 250 strikeouts in 251 innings of work and a 2.40 earned run average whil walking a career-low 57 batters. The 6-5, 225-pounder had four complete games and two shutouts including his second career no-hitter earlier this season against Toronto. Teams batted just .192 against him as he won 12 straight starts down the stretch and helped the Tigers take the AL Central, their first division title since 1987.

The Detroit ace led the majors in wins, innings pitched, strikeouts and was fourth in ERA. He was selected to his fourth Major League All-Star game in July. The 2006 AL Rookie of the Year is the Colonial Athletic Association, ODU's and Commonwealth of Virginia's all-time strikeout king with 427 in 335.2 innings. Verlander was a two-time All-CAA selection, Freshman All-American and member of the USA Baseball team that won silver in the 2003 Pan Am games.

The former Monarch drew all 28 first-place votes in balloting by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America and finished with 196 points. A four-time All-Star, Verlander became the first former AL Rookie of the Year to also take the Cy Young.
