Samantha Morrell Just Four Strokes Back At C-USA Championships

GULF SHORES, Ala. - ODU senior women's golfer Samantha Morrell shot 75 in the second round and is tied for eighth at 149, just four strokes off the lead at the 2013 Conference USA Women's Golf Championships at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club in Golf Shores, AL. As a team, ODU is tied for eighth with Southern Mississippi.

No. 20 Tulane extended its lead to 12 strokes after posting a 295 during day two. East Carolina's Nico Engstroem Skaug and Tulane's Madison Opfer share the lead at 1-over (145) par after 36 holes on the par-72 6,162-yard course.

Opfer shot the low round Tuesday, carding a 1-under 71 to pace four Green Wave golfers in the top six. Opfer is joined by Emily Penttila (2-over, t3rd), Silvia Garces (3-over, 5th) and Gemma Dryburgh (4-over, t6th) on the leaderboard.

No. 48 East Carolina remains in second place with three players holding spots in the top 10 entering the final round. Skaug, who was tied for the lead after the first round, remains tied for the top spot, while Frida Gustafsson Spang is tied for third place at 2-over par. Fanny Wolte will enter the final 18 in a tie for eighth place at 5-over.

Tulane and East Carolina have seven of the nine players, including ties, among the top eight individuals after two rounds. Tulsa's Antonia Von Wnuck and Old Dominion's Samantha Morrell are tied for sixth and eighth place, respectively, while ODU's Kimberley Bradbury is tied for 18th at 152 with Elizabeth Haycock 27th at 155.

No. 44 UCF sits in third place with a pair of golfers tied for 10th place in Robyn Doig and Monifa Sealy, while No. 33 SMU holds fourth place, five shots behind UCF. The first groups in Wednesday's final round will tee off at 7:45 a.m. CDT. SMU, Tulsa and UTEP will start on hole No. 1, with Tulane, East Carolina and UCF following off the No. 1 tee at 8:35 a.m. Memphis, Southern Miss and Old Dominion will begin on No. 10 at 7:45 a.m., while UAB and Marshall will go off No. 10 at 8:35 a.m.

The winner of the C-USA Championship will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals.
