Varsity Four and Eight Heading to Knecht Cup Grand Finals

CAMDEN, N.J. - Old Dominion's Varsity Four and Varsity Eight are heading to the Grand Finals of the 2011 Knecht Cup. The Lady Monarchs were among over 50 schools from across the country competing in this year's regatta on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.

The Varsity Four dominated the quarterfinal heat not only winning their heat in a time of 8:17.34, but rowing to the top time among the 29 boats entered. In their quarterfinal heat, the Lady Monarchs had an 11.30 margin over the quarterfinal heat's second place Duke.

The Lady Monarch Varsity Four then rowed their way to the Grand Final by winning their semifinal heat. ODU rowed to a first place time of 8:16.51, the third fastest time among the 18 boats that advanced. The Lady Monarchs also held a 10.49 second edge over the heat's second place Boston College.

ODU will take on Delaware, Colgate, UMass, Duke, Drexel, and Wisconsin in tomorrow's Grand Final.

Also rowing in tomorrow's Grand Final is ODU's Varsity Eight boat who also placed first in both the semifinal and quarterfinal heats.

In the quarterfinals, just like Varsity Four, the Lady Monarchs' Varsity 8 captured the top team of all the boats entered. Rowing to a time of 7:06.21, ODU edged out their heat's second place team, Buffalo, by over four seconds.

The Varsity Eight then advanced to the Grand Final by winning their heat in the semifinals with the second fastest time of the 18 boats that had advanced. The Lady Monarchs posted a time of 6:45.51, taking first place in their semifinal heat by a three second margin over Grand Valley.

ODU will take on Duke, Wisconsin, Rutgers, West Virginia, and Grand Valley in the Grand Final.

Also taking to the Cooper River on Saturday was ODU's Second Varsity Eight. They placed fourth in their quarterfinal head with the top two shells of the heat advancing to the semfinals. Delaware won the heat in a time of 7:33.62, followed by Rutgers (7:42.63), Fordham (7:48.90), and then Old Dominion with a time of 7:53.97.
