ODU And St. Joseph's Split Doubleheader-Baker Sets ODU Hit Streak Mark

NORFOLK, VA--The ODU Baseball Monarchs split Saturday's doubleheader with Saint Joseph's winning the opener, 10-4 and dropping the nightcap, 7-5. ODU is now 2-1, SJU is 1-2.

Junior firstbaseman Chris Baker (Chesapeake, Va. ) extended his hitting streak to an ODU school record 31 games as he had three hits in game one with three RBI and two hits and two RBI in game two. The previous mark was by Anthony Forrelli during the 1997 and 98 seasons.

In game one, Baker and Donnie Corsner each knocked in a run to give the Monarchs a 3-0 lead in the first inning. In the fourth inning Brent Frazier and Josh Tutwiler hit back-to-back solo homers. ODU did it again in the seventh as Baker and Shawn Sizemore hit back-to-back solo shots.

Junior righthander Ben Tomchick scattered four hits , with two walks and seven strikeouts through seven innings of work to pick up the win.

In the second game, SJU jumped out to a 4-0 lead with the help of five walks and RBI hits Kevin Kratochwil, and Dan DiOrio . ODU fought back in the fifth with three runs on a two-run Double by Brent Frazier and an RBI double by Baker.

The Monarchs tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles from Baker and Shawn Sizemore. The Hawks re-took the lead in the ninth on an RBI double by Cody Silverman and a sacrifice fly RBI by Brett Tiagwad. Ryan Kemp came on in the ninth to pick up the save for Matt Buccheri. Sizemore and Frazier each had two hits for ODU in game two.

The two teams will play the fourth and final game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
