NORFOLK, VA-- Former Old Dominion University pitching greats Justin Verlander ('04) of the Detroit Tigers and Daniel Hudson ('08) of the Arizona Diamondbacks will be leading their respective teams into the Major League Baseball playoffs beginning this weekend. The two have 40 wins between them which is the best college tandem from one school in the Majors.

Justin Verlander is 24-5 with 250 strikeouts in 251 innings of work and a 2.40 earned run average. The 6-5, 225-pounder has four complete games and two shutouts including his second career no-hitter earlier this season against Toronto. Teams are only hitting .235 against him.

Verlander ranks first in the American League in wins, innings pitched, strikeouts, ERA and is fourth in complete games. He was selected to his fourth Major League All-Star game in July. The 2006 AL Rookie of the Year is the Colonial Athletic Association, ODU's and Commonwealth of Virginia's all-time strikeout king with 427 in 335.2 innings. Verlander was a two-time All-CAA selection, Freshman All-American and member of the USA Baseball team that won silver in the 2003 Pan Am games.

Daniel Hudson is 16-12 with a 3.49 earned run average. The 6-3, 230-pounder fanned 169 batters in 220 innings of work with three complete games. Opponents are batting .255 against him. Hudson ranks sixth in the National League in wins, fifth in innings pitched and fourth in complete games. Hudson also got it done with the bat as he hit .277 with one homer and 14 RBI tops among NL pitchers.

Hudson is a three-time All-CAA pitcher and ODU's third all-time strikeout leader with 295 trailing only Verlander and former ODU Major Leaguer, and ODU Hall of Famer Kevin Bearse ('87) with 325.
