Wright And Hald Lead ODU Over VCU, 5-3

RICHMOND, VA-- ODU junior shortstop Josh Wright (Bridgewater, VA.) slammed two homeruns and Kyle Hald (Springfield, VA.) fanned 11 in six innings of work to lead the Monarchs to a 5-3 CAA victory over VCU tonight at the Diamond. ODU is 13-14 overall and 6-4 in the CAA.
ODU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Wright slammed his seventh home run of the season over the left field wall with freshman Brian Bashara (Norfolk, VA.) aboard. In the third inning Wright hit another homer to left, this time with Brandon Shelton (Chesapeake, VA.) aboard.
In the sixth inning Wright tripled and scored on Chris Bakers'(Chesapeake, VA.) ground out. VCU got on the board when Bill Cullen singled home Michael Cheatham and Chris Ayers in the fourth.
Nick Kime hit a solo shot to lead off the sixth for VCU to make it 5-3. Kyle Hald the CAA's strikeout leader fanned 11 in six innings of work for his fourth win of the season.
Hald lowered his ERA to 2.76 and now has 62 strikeouts in 49 innings. This is the second time this season Hald has fanned 11 batters.
Brandon Shelton and Shawn Sizemore each had two hits for ODU, while Josh Wright went three-for-four with two homers, and a triple and four runs batted in. He also scored three times. VCU was led by Michael Cheatham with three hits. The Rams stranded 11 runners.
The two teams play Saturday at the Diamond, beginning at 1 p.m.
