Over the weekend, the Old Dominion University rowing team swept Southern Methodist while also defeating Central Florida on a two-kilometer course on Indian Creek in Miami Beach, Fla. The Lady Monarchs also fell to Miami (Fla.), which completed a 2-1 weekend for the Old Dominion.

SMU was no match for the Lady Monarchs on Saturday night. Against SMU, Old Dominion started out with a very close two second victory in the Varsity Eight race. In the Second Varsity Eight, ODU finished in 7:26.0, while SMU completed the race at the 7:38.6-mark. In their third and final race against SMU, the Lady Monarchs finished over 30 seconds ahead in the Varsity Four.

Old Dominion had their hands full in their win over Central Florida on Sunday morning. Action kicked off with UCF narrowly escaping with a win in the Varsity Eight race. UCF finished in 7:01.5, while ODU completed the race in 7:02.4. The Varsity Eight race set the tone for the Second Varsity Eight, where the race would be decided by a blink of an eye. This time the Lady Monarchs were able to raise their arms in triumph as they defeated UCF, 7:14.1-7:14.2. After splitting the first two races, ODU and UCF's meet came down to the Varsity Four race. In the Varsity Four race, Old Dominion turned it on and took down UCF by over 16 seconds.

Both Southern Methodist and Central Florida are full-time members of the C-USA, which means the Lady Monarchs will compete against both teams again at the C-USA Championships on May 18 on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Competition began on Saturday morning with ODU dropping two of three races to host, Miami. The Lady Monarchs' Varsity Four went a perfect 3-0 on the weekend. The University of Miami rowing program appeared in the latest edition of the NCAA Regional Rankings. As a team, Miami is ranked No. 6 in the South Region. The Canes' First Varsity Eight ranks No. 5 in the region. The Canes' Second Varsity Eight also cracked the regional rankings, earning the No. 6 slot. The Hurricanes also received two votes in the latest CRCA/US Rowing Coaches Poll.

Up next for the Lady Monarchs is the 2013 Dad Vail Regatta on May 10-11 in Philadelphia, Pa. This will mark the 75th anniversary of what is now the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, which is held on the beautiful Schuylkill River.
