UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Monarchs were led by unattached true freshman Andy Totusek at the Nittany Lion Open on Sunday, as the 285-pounder took fourth for ODU. He went 4-2 at the tournament and was narrowly defeated by two nationally ranked grapplers. Totusek became the third placewinner of the weekend for ODU.

Totusek stormed out of the gate with four straight victories on Sunday, including a 7-0 shutout of Cornell's Maciej Jochym. In the semifinal match, though, he was across the mat from Kent State's Jermail Porter. Porter is ranked 15th in the nation at heavyweight and was an NCAA Qualifier a year ago. Porter defeated Totusek by a narrow margin of three points in a 5-2 decision.

In the third place bout, Totusek was matched up against the 18th ranked grappler in the nation and another NCAA Qualifier Rashard Goff (Cleveland State). Goff only scored two points on the Monarch in a 2-0 decision over the Monarch.

Derek Coffey and Sam Hunt notched victories for the Monarchs at 174 lbs. Coffey started with a 4-2 decision over Delaware State's Brandon Gardner before being sent to the consolation bracket with a 0-7 loss to Penn State's Dave Erwin. Coffey would then add a pin in under a minute of Ryan Schuelke (Navy Prep) but would drop a 1-4 decision to Cleveland State's Jarrel Miller.

Hunt would mirror Coffey's efforts with a 9-5 decision over Hofstra's Lawrence Beckman before Miller pinned Hunt in the first period, sending him to the consolation bracket. Hunt was then pinned again by Michigan backup Justin Zeerip.

Scott Cust had a pin at 184 lbs and a win by forfeit before dropping two straight. He pinned Michigan State's Eric Anderson in the third period and earned the forfeit victory over Delaware State's Derrick Loper.

The Monarchs are off for several weeks, as they take time for exams and the holiday before their next tournament. ODU returns to action in the final week of December at the Southern Scuffle Tournament.
