Norfolk, Va. - The Lady Monarch rowing team held the first of what will be an annual Blue-White Regatta on Saturday as they begin preparation for the upcoming spring season. Blue and White Day will always be an intrasquad team regatta, but will eventually evolve into a Class Day Regatta where freshmen will race sophomores, juniors will race seniors, and so on. However, given the make up of this year's squad, it was a regatta of mixed lineups.
In the Women's 4, the Lady Monarchs A boat comprised of Kady Stapp (cox), Liz Hess, Jennifer Easterling, Diana Lewis and Amanda May, took first place with a time of 6:32.87. The B boat (Mia Maceren (cox), Christina Gravelle, Heather Earle, Anotonia Sergie, Suzanne Miller) completed the course in a time 6:39.73.
There was somewhat of a surprise in the Women's 8 as the B boat came out on top in a time of 5:57.59, led by Kelsey Hazelwood (cox), Heather Earle, Christina Gravelle, Ashley Olmstead, Jennifer Easterling, Alicia Smith, Amanda May, Meredith Marlowe and Antonia Sergie. Just over eight seconds behind (6:05.89) was the A boat comprised of Beth Doughtie (cox), Liz Hess, Meredith McPherson, Callie Roadcap, Marie, Gately, Suzanne Miller, Heather Leach, Diana Lewis and Laurel Bransfield.
"We were really happy with the outcome of our first Blue and White Day Regatta," said head coach Heather Weisel. "The conditions were amazing and the racing was close on our 1750 course. Our novice from the fours raced first, hot seated into lineups with our freshmen and varsity athletes in the ights and then raced the eights down the course. It was a valuable experience for the team and especially our very young coxswains. We are excited about the creation of another new tradition and look forward to its evolution."
The Lady Monarchs will now set their sights on their first race of the spring, an April 4 contest at Clemson.
