The Old Dominion baseball team fell to #14 South Carolina 10-3 Saturday in the second day of ESPN Radio 1340 Baseball Shootout hosted by the Citadel in Charleston, S.C.

USC Starter David Marchbanks pitched seven strong innings and the Gamecocks scored four runs in the third and the seventh to hand the Monarchs (1-1) their first loss of 2003.

Junior thirdbaseman Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD) was the only Monarch to have two hits as junior secondbaseman Jesse Schoendiest's (Belcamp, MD) second inning triple was ODU's only extra base hit. Senior outfielder Pedro Pena (Haverhill, MA.) drove in his second run of the season with Schoediest and Derrick James (Terre Haute, IN) adding the other RBI's.

Marchbanks allowed six hits and three runs, only one of them earned. He struck out three and for the second consecutive start did not walk a batter. Old Dominion starter Richard Shefka, 0-1, gave up eight hits and five earned runs in 3 1/3 innings and was charged with the loss.

ODU and Tennessee will meet tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. on the final day of the Citadel Tournament.
