Both ODU Boats Advance to Semi's at Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta

NORFOLK, Va. – On Friday, two of Old Dominion’s boats competed in the 75th Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta in the Philadelphia, Pa. Both Lady Monarch’ boats advanced to the semifinal races, as ODU’s Frosh/Novice Four took first in their quarterfinal race while the Varsity Four boat placed third in their heat. Semifinal action will kickoff on Saturday morning along the Schuylkill River.

The Lady Monarchs’ Frosh/Novice Four boat completed the track in 8:05.34, which was good enough for a first place finish by nearly 17 seconds. Rochester Institute of Technology will be the lone school joining ODU in the semifinals from this heat, as they placed second with a time of 8:22.17. Northwestern (8:41.49) and Carnegie Mellon (9:15.82) finished in third and fourth, respectively.

Old Dominion’s Frosh/Novice boat will compete in one of three semifinal heats on Saturday morning. Clemson, Fairfield, Chicago, Lehigh and Orange Crust will be in ODU’s heat. The top two times from each of the three Frosh/Novice Four semifinals will advance to the finals on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Monarchs’ Varsity Four boat finished their initial heat in 7:31.66, which was good enough for a third place finish and a spot in one of three semifinals on Saturday morning. Drexel won Friday morning’s heat with a time of 7:20.98, while William and Mary finished in 7:25.48 and placed second. Old Dominion finished ahead of Marist (7:38.35) and the U.S. Military Academy (7:49.28).

On Saturday morning, ODU’s Varsity Four boat will be in a semifinal heat with Colgate, Northwestern, Robert Morris, Cincinnati and George Mason. The fastest two times will advance to the finals on Saturday afternoon.
The Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, with over 100 colleges and universities from the U.S. and Canada.

Each year, thousands of student athletes gather to compete during the weekend of the second Saturday in May. This prestigious regatta takes places on the Schuylkill River. In all, there are roughly 150 races throughout the two days on the 2,000 meter Olympic-sized course.
