Perez Walk-Off Homer In Ninth Lifts ODU Over Longwood, 9-8

NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion University's sophomore catcher Mike Perez (Fairfax Station, VA.) led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a solo homer as the Monarchs defeated Longwood, 9-8 Wednesday night in the final home game of the 30th season at the Bud Metheny Baseball complex. ODU is now 28-24 on the season and Longwood drops to 24-26. It was also ODU's 20 win at home this season, and 700th overall win at the Bud against only 291 losses.

The Lancers tied the game up at 8-8 on a two-run homer by Scott Burkett in the seventh inning, before Perez belted his sixth homer of the season to win the contest in the ninth. Longwood pounded out 14 hits on the night led by Kyri Washington and Alex Owens with three hits each. Washington knocked in five runs for Longwood highlighted by a three-run homer in the third inning.

Junior outfielder Ben Verlander (Maidens, VA.), Michael Perez, designated hitter Ben Slaton (Magnolia, MS.) and and thirdbaseman Jordan Negrini (Kihei, Hawaii) each had two hits for ODU, while sophomore outfielder Josh Eldridge (Lorton, VA.) and Perez both knocked in two runs.

The Lancers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on RBI hits from Alex Owens and Kyri Washington,but the Monarchs rallied with fours run in the bottom of the inning with RBI hits from Eldridge, P.J.Higgins (Wallingford, CT.), Perez and Ben Slaton.

ODU built the lead to 5-2 before Washington slammed his three-run homer tying the game at 5-5 in the top of the third.

In the Bottom of the third, senior Austin McGowan (Midlothian, VA.) hit his third homer of the season to put ODU up 6-5.ODU freshman Jake Josephs pitched the top of the ninth, striking out the side and picked up his fourth win of the season.

The Monarchs hit the road for its final two games at Wofford (Spartanburg, SC.) Friday night at Saturday afternoon.
