Wrestling Monarchs In 2nd After 8-2 Day At CAA Championship

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The #19 Old Dominion Monarchs wrestling team finished the first day of the CAA Tournament nine points behind #17 Hofstra for the lead. ODU went 8-2 on the first day, tallying 20.5 team points for a second place effort. All 10 participating Monarchs are still alive starting day two.

Leading the way for ODU was #10 James Nicholson, the #1 seed at 125 lbs. He pinned Sacred Heart's Ed Galvin in 3:40, scoring a team-high three team points for the Monarchs.

At 133 lbs, #17 Kyle Hutter, the #2 seed, won his match scoring 20 match points on Boston University's Abby Rush. The bout ended in a 20-9 major decision scoring two team points for Hutter in his 30th win and 10th major decision of the season.

Two seed at 141 lbs, Ryan Williams advanced with a 9-3 decision over Cory Dunn (Sacred Heart). Following Williams' win, the first loss of the day for ODU came at 149 lbs as Kaylen Baxter, the #4 seed, suffered a 4-7 decision at the hands of #5 seed Mitch Smith (Hofstra). Dan Rivera, the #5 seed also just missed a victory at 157 lbs, falling to Frankie McLaughlin (George Mason), 5-7.

Next up for ODU was #1 seeded Chris Brown at 165 lbs, who knocked George Mason's Tyler Tisdell to the consolation bracket with a 7-3 decision.

Nick Pullano, Old Dominion's only senior, followed with another bonus point victory for the Monarchs, scoring two team points with an 12-4 major decision. Second-seeded 184-pounder Jesse Strawn piled a team-high 22 points on his opponent on day one, winning by technical fall, 22-6.

Rounding out the day for Old Dominion was junior David Mendoza, grabbing a 10-1 major decision over Boston University's five seed John Hall. He was followed by ODU freshman Andy Totusek earned a 4-2 win over Binghamton's Mike Patterson in his first ever CAA Tournament bout.
