No. 54 Men's Tennis Begins Challenging Week Saturday Versus UTSA

NORFOLK, Va. - No. 54 Old Dominion University men's tennis hosts Texas-San Antonio on Saturday and follows that with a three-match stint on the road against No. 65 Virginia Tech, Illinois State and No. 48 Yale.

The Monarchs are 9-3 on the year with a win over No. 27 Harvard. ODU has won five-straight matches and coming off a 2-0 weekend in Florida with wins over Florida Gulf Coast and Florida Atlantic.

Sophomore Carlos Lopez Villa leads the Monarchs with a 12-0 record at No. 1 singles. A native of Madrid, Spain, Lopez Villa has a pair of wins over ranked opponents and is also ranked No. 58 in doubles with partner Can Cetinel. Junior Wesley Barrett and freshman Zvonimir Podvinski are tied for second on the team with eight wins while Albert Ochagavia has a 7-4 record at No. 2 singles.

UTSA is 6-5 on the year and is 0-3 against ranked opponents. Diogo Casa leads the Roadrunners with a 7-3 record while playing No. 2 singles.

The Monarchs play Virginia Tech at the Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 11.

The Hokies are 5-3 this season and 3-3 against ranked foes. Andreas Bjerrehus is 8-1 on the year, and 5-1 at No. 1 and is ranked No. 74 in the country. Amerigo Contini is 7-1 and ranked No. 68. The tandem is 8-0 in doubles and No. 8 in the country.

ODU takes on Illinois State Friday, March 15 in Wilmington, N.C. The Redbirds are 5-6 and have lost their last three matches. There are no common opponents, but ISU played at William and Mary (L, 4-3) and VCU (L, 6-1).

The Monarchs wrap up the road trip against No. 48 Yale in Wilmington. The Bulldogs are 9-2 this season. The only common opponent between ODU and Yale is Harvard. ODU defeated Harvard 4-3 while Yale dropped a 4-2 decision.
