Van Der Merwe Named ITA All-American

NORFOLK, Va. -- One of the most decorated tennis student-athletes in Old Dominion history, senior Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa), was named an All-American by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) it was announced this week.
Van der Merwe, ranked 24th in the final ITA Poll released on June 3rd, posted a 27-12 singles mark during the 2004-05 season, which included victories over nine opponents ranked in the ITA Poll. Earning his second straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Player of the Year honor, he reach the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament, the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Tournament, and made his way to the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Tournament.
The South African native concluded his career with a career singles mark of 100-39, placing him second all-time in Old Dominion men's tennis history in career wins. Van der Merwe, who picked up All-American honors in doubles last season, also holds Old Dominion's all-time doubles record (92-45) and all-time total career wins (192-84). He also holds the distinction of reaching the semifinals or better in the three national championships (All-American, Nation Indoor, and NCAA), in both singles and doubles, during his career.
Van der Merwe will begin his professional career playing in the Legg Mason Wild Card Challenge followed by numerous USTA future events.
