Monarchs Wrestlers Take Third at Va. State Championships

The Old Dominion wrestling team finished third out of six teams at the Virginia Intercollegiate Meet Sunday at the Virginia Military Institute.
The Monarchs totalled 80 points on the day, finishing behind only tournament winner Virginia (94.5) and host VMI (86). George Mason finished fourth with 65 points and James Madison, 60 points, and the Apprentice School, 18 points, rounded out the standings
Senior Ben Summerlin (Lynchburg, VA) recorded falls in each of his three matches to earn the 174 pound title and was named the meet's Most Outstanding Wrestler. He pinned James Madison's Steve Broglie in 4:10, Brian Muir from UVA in 1:44 and Matt Erwin from VMI in the finals in 2:04.
Redshirt freshman Chris Buckner (Chesapeake, VA) was the other ODU Champion as he took the title at 133 pounds. He only had to get through two opponents, defeating VMI's Micah Amrozowizc, 3-2, and George Mason's Liam DeRenzis, 6-4, in the finals.
Freshman Adam Wright (Bridgewater, VA) at 184 and junior heavyweight Derrell Lorthridge (Wilmington, DE) each finished second in thier respective classes. Wright finished the meet with a 3-1 record with a fall and technical fall, while Lorthridge went 2-1 on the day. Freshman Matt Ulrey also recorded a second place showing in the 165 pound class with a 1-1 record. He shutout GMU's J.C. Cuffee 7-0 in the semifinals but lost the championship to Will Durkee from UVA, 3-2.
In all the Cavaliers had four weight class champions, JMU and ODU 2, while VMI and George Mason each had one
The Monarchs will next be in action this Friday and Saturday in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Duals hosted by George Mason.
