Christian Staylor and Adam Wright Score Victories at The Midlands

EVANSTON, IL -Redshirt Sophomore Christian Staylor (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge/125) and Junior Adam Wright (Dayton, VA/184) both scored victories over nationally ranked opponents at The 42nd annual Midlands, held at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, Dec. 29-30. Staylor and Wright faced a combined five ranked opponents in the tournament. ODU placed 47th in the team standings, with 3.0 points.
Christian Staylor, ranked #9 by Intermat and #12 by Amateur Wrestling News and W.I.N. Magazine, was the #8 seed in the 125 bracket. Staylor defeated #9 seed Adam Smith of Penn State (ranked #13 nationally) by a 8-3 decision in the first round before suffering a 3-0 loss to #1 seed Nick Simmons of Michigan State, who is ranked #3 nationally. In consolations, Staylor was defeated by #6 seed Luke Smith of Central Michigan by a 4-0 decision. Smith is ranked #17 nationally.
Adam Wright, ranked #20 by Amateur Wrestling News, was also the #8 seed in the 184 bracket. Wright defeated Northwestern's Joseph Gulotta by a 9-4 decision in the first round before suffering a 3-1 loss to #9 seed Ed Magrys of Eastern Michigan (ranked #18 nationally). In consolations, Wright was defeated by #10 seed Frank Cornely of Duke by a 8-6 decision. Cornely is ranked #19 nationally.
