Monarch Grapplers Place Fifth At Virginia State Championships

BLACKSBURG, VA (Jan. 22) - Old Dominion's wrestling team finished in fifth place at the Virginia Intercollegiate Championship at Virginia Tech.

The Monarchs placed four wrestlers in the top-four, including second place finishes by Jake Cairns (Brick, NJ) at 157 and #14 Jeff Rusak (Reading, PA) at 165.

Virginia Tech won the event with 106 points, followed by James Madison (91), Virginia (87), George Mason (46), Old Dominion (42.5), VMI (37) and Apprentice School (7). Virginia Tech's Chris Martin, ranked #11 at 165, was named Most Outstanding Wrestler after topping the Monarch's Rusak in the championship finals, 11-1.

Old Dominion freshman Dennis Whitby (Lanoka Harbor, NJ) got on the scoreboard with a third-place finish at 149. Whitby earned three wins en route to the third-place finish.

Cairns, the number four seed at 157, finished second after falling to second-seeded Jason O'Connor from James Madison, 6-3. Rusak then finished second at 165, falling to Martin in the only championship matchup between two nationally ranked wrestlers.

Sophomore Brad Krepps (Dauberville, PA) finished fourth at 197. Old Dominion returns to action on Wednesday as they host NC State at the ODU Fieldhouse at 7 pm.
