Old Dominion wrestling will get a boost this year from the administration and new head coach Steve Martin.

"The school has made a nice commitment to the wrestling program," said Martin, the new rookie coach and Virginia native. "Jim Jarrett, our athletic director, has plans to build a new 7500 square foot wrestling room as well as hiring the first ever full-time assistant coach (Lee Pritts)."

Martin, who continued the tradition at Great Bridge High School as head coach for 13 years, will move into the college ranks and begins a new era at ODU.

"We'd like to build this program into a top 10, top 20 program," Martin said.

A former Iowa All-American under Dan Gable, Martin will have plenty of competition within his state. Iowa legend Tom Brands is the new rookie head coach at Virginia Tech. Martin is ready and thrilled by the prospects.

"It will be great for the sport in Virginia," Martin said. "I'm sure a rivalry will be established between us very soon."

Martin and Brands, however, are great friends and were actually teammates at Iowa in the late 1980's. Already busy, Martin landed Arizona State transfer Christian Staylor (a former Great Bridge wrestler) who should start at 125 pounds.
