Throughout the summer the field at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex has been given a new facelift. The upcoming season will mark the 20th for the facility since its 1983 opening.
Crews have been working to replace the whole infield area from the backstop to seven feet deep into the outfield. The renovation was taken seven feet into the outfield in order to balance out the grade level between the infield and outfield.
"Over the past 20 years the infield had risen somewhat above the outfield level, creating a lip between them. Now they have been leveled out and the grading was done with laser equipment to provide the most accurate results," says Greg Smith, Assistant Athletic Director for Events and Operations.
A new homeplate and pitchers mound will be installed to complete the change. A new irrigation system is also being put into place around the diamond to help take care of the grass and better maintain the field.
The top quality work on the infield is being done by Nolan Thomas and Co. and the first rate irrigation system is being installed by Wright's Well and Irrigation. The improvements are expected to be complete by the end of August in order to be ready for fall workouts and practice.
