ODU TO CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARIES OF 1979/80 AND 1985 LADY MONARCH NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS
The Old Dominion University athletic department will celebrate two siginificant anniversaries on Sunday, Feb. 27 at the Lady Monarchs' home season finale with James Madison at 3 p.m. at the Constant Center.
Twenty-five years ago, the Lady Monarchs, led by All Americans Nancy Lieberman, Inge Nissen and Anne Donovan, captured their second consecutive AIAW national crown en route to posting a 37-1 record (the 1978/79 team won the title with a 35-1 mark). Then, five years later a new group of Lady Monarchs, led by All American Medina Dixon, Tracy Claxton and freshmen All Americans Donna Harrington and Adrienne Goodson, captured the NCAA title with a victory over the University of Georgia.
The teams will be honored during the halftime ceremonies of the game, which is being broadcast on Comcast Sportsnet in the Mid-Atlantic region. Early indications are that many of the former players will be in attendance, including Lieberman, Donovan, Rhonda Rompola, Chris Critelli, Dawn Cullen, Goodson, and more.
