Monarchs Pound Four Homers & 20 Hits In 13-10 Win At Wofford

SPARTANBURG, SC-- ODU sophomore Josh Eldridge (Lorton, VA.) had four hits, including two homers and Ben Slaton drove in six runs to lead the Monarchs (29-24) to a 13-10 victory over Wofford Friday night at King Field. In all, the Monarchs pounded out four homers and had 20 hits on the evening.
ODU took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI hits by Austin McGowan (Midlothian, VA.) and sophomore catcher Michael Perez (Fairfax Station, VA.). In the second, Ben Verlander (Maidens, VA.) and Josh Eldridge hit back-to-back solo homers for a 4-0 lead. It was Verlander's 11th of the season which ranks third in the CAA behind Delaware's Nick Ferdinand(14) and Jimmy Yezzo (12), while Eldridge now has six homers.
In the third inning designated hitter Ben Slaton (Magnolia, MS.) slammed a home run with McGowan aboard.
The Monarchs added two more in the fourth inning as McGowan and Ben Slaton had RBI singles to increase the lead to 8-0.
After being held hitless for four innings, Wofford got on the scoreboard with three runs in the fifth on a bases loaded double by by Matthew Pelt. The Terriers rallied with four runs in the ninth to cut the Monarchs lead to 13-10, keyed by a two-run RBI single by Josh Hyman, but could get no closer.
Eight of ODU's nine starters had atleast one hit on the evening. Ben Slaton, freshman PJ Higgins (Wallingford, CT.) and Austin McGowan each had three hits for the Monarchs. Slaton, who drove in six runs doubled home three runs in the six inning and finished three-for-five on the night.
Junior lefthander Andy Roberts (Prescott, AZ.) picked up his fifth win of the season to run his record to 5-3. He pitched six innings and gave up three runs, three hits and fanned two batters.
The final game of the series is Saturday at 2 p.m.
