Monarch Wrestling Finalizes 2004-05 Starting Lineup After Blue-Silver Scrimmage
Nov. 13, 2004
NORFOLK, VA - The Old Dominion University wrestling team finalized its starting lineup for the 2004-05 season, as the team hosted the Blue-Silver Match at the Athletic Administration Building Gymnasium before 325 people. In the 12-match schedule, starters were decided for nine of the 10 weights as the Monarchs start their season next Saturday at both the Old Dominion Invitational at the ODU Field House and the Missouri Open in Columbia, MO.
Earlier in the day, from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M., Head Coach Steve Martin and his assistants Lee Pritts, Cory Ace and John Testa--all NCAA All-Americans--held a wrestling clinic. Over 120 people from around the community attended and showed their support for ODU wrestling.
149: Hunter Davenport (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) countered a reversal attempt by Jake Forestiere (Yorktown, VA) in the afternoon's final match, to score the fall in the second period. Davenport trailed 3-2 when Forestiere tried to sit out and come around the outside. Davenport then stepped over, earning the fall at 4:22. Earlier in the day, Davenport edged Josh Puryear 5-4, while Forestiere beat Puryear 11-2.
125: Redhsirt Sophomore Christian Staylor (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) spent very little time on the mat in his first appearance for the Monarchs. Staylor pinned freshman Selas Douglas (Lorton, VA) with a cradle just 18 seconds into the first period. Staylor, an NCAA qualifier last season at Arizona State, is the second Staylor brother to wrestle for Old Dominion. Older brother Jody was an NCAA runner-up in 1994.
133: True freshman B.J. Compton (Christiansburg, VA), fresh off a solid performance last week at the West Virginia Open, used several powerful cradles to rack up backpoints in beating Jared Smith by technical fall 17-1 (5:08) at 133 pounds.
141: Shanon Slack (Richmond, VA), a transfer from Fresno State, also wrestled well last week at the West Virginia Open, finishing third. Slack secured his spot in the lineup with a 17-6 victory over Redshirt Freshman Donald Motley (Chesapeake, VA/Deep Creek). Slack totalled seven takedowns.
157: Redshirt freshman Nick Pullano (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) scored a fall in his match against sophomore Jack Downin (Herndon, VA) at 157 poinds. Pullano jumped to a 5-0 lead on a takedown and a tight-waist title for three points before securing the fall at 2:33.
165: Junior Robby Gosnell (Warrenton, VA) outlasted freshman James Conyers (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch) at 165 pounds. Teh two wrestled to a scoreless first period before Gosnell scored a quick reversal in the second period and rode out Conyers. A third-period takedown and riding time advantage gave him the 5-1 victory.
285: Junior John Dolida (Bridgewater, NJ) succesfully moved up to heavyweight, pinning freshman Jon Chernega (Ashburn, VA) at the 4:05 mark in the second period. Dolida scored two first-period takedowns and two nearfall points to go up 6-1 before getting a second period reversal and powered Chernega to his back for the fall.
The Monarchs host the ODU Invitational next Saturday, November 20, at the ODU Field House Gym.
